When I was producing handbags in Paris over forty years ago, I had the privilege of visiting craftsmen’s workrooms to buy buckles and other components, often in the 3rd, 11th and 20th arrondissements.
Today gentrification and real estate prices have pushed them out of the city or they have been outsourced around the globe.
Fortunately their signage remains, a “selling point” from days past to add caché to a building: here a bookbinder, medallion producer and structural builder - plus an old storefront converted as a florist with suspended cutlery and a metal plate as decor that hark back to the neighborhood’s metalworkers.
